Success Dogs’ Guiding Principles

At Success Dogs, our mission is to help dog owners learn the most effective training methods to raise their dogs (and puppies) to become happy, obedient, and well-behaved family pets for the rest of their lives.

Our approach to training dogs is vastly different from most. We do not use any form of physical punishment that inflicts pain, such as corrections or equipment like prong, choke or shock collars.

Instead, we focus on rewarding dogs for the good decisions they make. This revolutionary training method results in dogs that are totally obedient — not because they are forced to but because they want to.

As master trainers who want to improve the lives of dogs and their humans, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of dog training. All of our training programs, lessons, and coaching strictly adhere to the following guiding principles:

1. No matter what the situation, we shall NEVER use a technique on a dog that inflicts physical pain. Prohibited techniques include but are not limited to hitting a dog; scolding a dog; using a choke, prong, or shock collar; or giving any physical corrections with the intent to create pain.

1. We shall ALWAYS train logically with a clear set of achievable objectives. Such objectives include creating training game plans in which dogs can be successful 80 percent of the time while also ensuring that dogs master the skill at hand.

1. In the event that a behavior needs to be suppressed, it shall ONLY be suppressed by taking away something the dog values, such as play, freedom or attention. This technique operates on the same principle as getting a ticket for driving inappropriately, resulting in the loss of money.

All of our training lessons must ALWAYS have a strong emphasis on play and making the training pleasurable for dogs and their owners. Even the most mundane tasks can become exciting when incorporated with games like fetch, tugging, and play-wrestling.

Our guiding principles serve two purposes: to protect our beloved animals from abuse and the behavioral problems often created by traditional training methods and to prevent dogs from ever stepping foot inside a shelter.

Effective training is the key to both of these principles. According to a recent study conducted by the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy (NCPPSP), 96 percent of dogs that are abandoned and/or given to a shelter had not received any obedience training.
